It appears the virtual sky above China has just lost another cloud: Dropbox.

Today, Chinese users are waking to the reality that one of the most popular cloud storage services in the world is now being blocked (again) by China’s firewall. According to censorship watchdog GreatFire.org this new block is affecting both web and software versions of the Dropbox platform. The GreatFire team, which continually tests the accessibility of web links from inside China to identify new blocks, shows that dl.dropbox.com  is no longer accessible from inside China, which also suggests that its apps will no longer work. To make matters worse, the main Dropbox.com appears blocked there too, according to the organization’s stats.

Speaking publicly using a pseudonymn, one GreatFire founder shared that the organization believes China’s blocking of Google and the reversal of its policy on Dropbox shows the country “is willing to crack down on other foreign services more harshly than ever.”

Earlier this month, we reported that Google and all its services—including Search, Gmail, Calendar, and Translate—were cut off in China ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, in what is believed to be a government attempt to silence any talk about the topic.

For many this block means they have lost access to important personal and work files. Some users have taken to twitter to voice their complaints:

How to unblock Dropbox in China

Those who have traveled to China and experienced the great firewall first hand already know that popular websites like Twitter, Facebook, and now Google are completely blocked. The government goes even further by utilizing deep packet inspection techniques to filter or block VPN and proxy access. This means that standard proxy, OpenVPN or PPTP VPN connections will be discovered and blocked within minutes of connecting.
