After months of disruption to Google services that began during the Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, Gmail is now completely blocked off in China going on four days. Reports are now coming in that access to Gmail is trickling back to mainland China, however this won’t curb the frustration that many businesses and consumers have experienced over this week.
Up until now, those accessing Gmail in China could still do so through email services like Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook because these apps utilize POP, SMAP or IMAP. This is no longer the case as thousands have now been blocked by China’s Great Firewall. Interestingly, it appears Gmail was singled out by this block since users of Yahoo or Microsoft email services have encountered no interruption.
Google’s official Transparency report shows a drastic drop in access to Gmail services from China that began last Friday:

While this wide spread Gmail ban is new, censorship in this region is not. These actions discourage the spread of open information throughout the country and attempts to force Chinese users into adopting alternative services like Baidu, which are Chinese owned and heavily censored by the government.
The Solution: VPN Service
For those that require FULL access to the internet within China’s borders, there is only one solution: a VPN (Virtual Private Network). VPN software is easy to turn on and off with the click of a button and makes it easy to circumvent censorship and website blocks. When turned on, a VPN tunnels one’s entire connection through a secure and encrypted server anywhere in the world. A user residing in China could connect to a USA server and instantly unblock web services like Gmail and Facebook.
Unblocking websites in China should be easy with any VPN service, right? Unfortunately, this is not the case. In addition to heavy internet censorship, China’s Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) firewall is very successful at blocking or severely limiting all standard VPN protocols. For this reason it is important to make sure that your VPN provider will work within China. TorGuard has engineered special “Stealth” connections that are guaranteed to bypass this DPI firewall and provide “invisible” VPN access anywhere within China.
TorGuard Stealth VPN service is a privacy tool that empowers you to bypass strict VPN censorship even behind China’s great firewall. Unlike normal VPN traffic which can be filtered or blocked by a DPI firewall, TorGuard Stealth VPN service will appear as regular HTTP traffic making it virtually impossible to block. No more random disconnections or throttled VPN sessions – TorGuard stealth VPN will go un-noticed and allow you to view the web in its entirety.
