While this sounds beneficial for Kazakhstan users, the certificate is providing an infrastructure for Kazakhstan to remove encryption from user data so that they can control the flow of data much easier. It will give Kazakhstan complete control over the internet in the country.
While this news is surprising, the state of surveillance in the country isn’t. Recent investigations have found that internet monitoring centers with mass surveillance capabilities have been sold to Kazakhstan by US and Israeli countries.
This new certificate also might cause issues with popular sites like Google and Twitter, which have a list of official certificates that let users connect to them. This means that Kazakhstan users would not be able to access this site from a newly issued certificate that isn’t supported.
