Russia is experimenting with new ways of cutting off the entire Russian population from the internet. The purpose? Just in case the Russian government doesn’t want people talking about or getting information on a “potential domestic political crisis.” People will have their internet freedom stolen to keep things under control through deep packet inspection techniques.
This information has been provided by Andrei Semerikov, a general director of Russian Internet provider Er Telecom. Semerikov told the newspaper that their company was ordered by the ministry of communications and Russia’s national Internet regulator to block traffic to foreign communications channels by using a traffic control system. The goal being to see if Russia could access the internet despite being cut off from the source.
Of course once Russian officials found out about this leak, they denied knowing anything about these potential “experiments”. It’s hard to believe the Russian officials since there have been numerous reports in the past on similar tests where Russia’s defense ministry experimented with cutting off any part of the web not registered to certain Russian domain names.
Andrei Soldatov, an expert in Russian security, thinks that the tests are hinting at the government shutting down the flow of information from the outside world to minimize western influence on Russia itself.
Should this information come as a surprise? While South Africa is trying to push a new amendment forward to limit internet freedom, Russia already has similar laws that give them power to blacklist websites as “extremist” or harmful to children. Russia is a great showcase of how a country can abuse loosely worded laws like these to ban websites freely. For example, Gary Kasparov, a chess champion and a Russian government critic, has his site banned.
