When the US House of Representatives approved the bill requiring ByteDance to divest TikTok, a popular video app, to a US company or risk a ban in the US due to national security concerns, the Chinese government condemned the move as an act of intimidation.

Ironically, TikTok, like other globally popular social media platforms, is also unavailable in China. On the flip side, ByteDance developed a localized version, Douyin, for Chinese users to adhere to the country's strict censorship regulations. This pattern extends beyond TikTok to other platforms like Alibaba's Ding Talk, which has a local version called Ding Ding in China.

A recent research report by the App Censorship project, titled "Isolation by Design," revealed that over 60% of the top 100 apps globally on the Apple App Store are either inaccessible or unavailable in China. These include popular apps like Google Maps, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp.

Moreover, among the top ten most downloaded apps worldwide, half are inaccessible, further highlighting the isolation of Chinese iOS users from the global app ecosystem. While China warns against economic disconnection from the West, its censorship measures are tailored to isolate users from international apps, as emphasized by the research findings.

Games emerged as the most censored category of apps in China, with over 27% of apps being unavailable in China Apple Stores. This heightened censorship may be attributed to the stricter regulations surrounding games in the country, such as real-name verification and approval processes for game entry. This hinders overseas game apps from entering the Chinese market, despite the significant growth of the domestic game industry.

In addition to games, the research team identified eight sensitive app categories in China, including VPNs, privacy & digital security, Dating, News, Media & Information, Social Media & Communication, Tibet & Buddhism, Uyghur, and Religion. Each category faces censorship challenges, with varying degrees of restrictions based on content.

Apple's role in complying with Chinese censorship regulations has come under scrutiny, with concerns raised over its lack of transparency and accountability in the process. The research team called for greater transparency in Apple's censorship practices, including disclosing details of takedown requests and review processes. Upholding human rights principles amidst censorship challenges was emphasized as essential for global tech companies like Apple, urging them to challenge arbitrary takedown requests and advocate for digital and human rights standards worldwide.

The exclusion from globally popular apps represents a significant hardship for users in China, isolating them from a vast segment of the digital world. For those affected, TorGuard VPN offers multiple China VPN options, providing a gateway to unrestricted internet access and bridging the gap to global connectivity.
