Moscow has announced plans to block access to 81 European media outlets in retaliation to the European Union's decision to ban four Kremlin-funded news organizations. The EU's ban, which went into effect on June 25, includes the state-run RIA Novosti news agency, the pro-government newspapers Izvestia and Rossiiskaya Gazeta, as well as the news website Voice of Europe.
In response to the EU's actions, Russia has identified 81 newspapers, broadcasters, and magazines from almost all EU member states that will no longer be available in Russia. This includes well-known media outlets such as the French news agency AFP, the German weekly Der Spiegel, and the European edition of Politico.
According to Russia's Foreign Ministry, the banned news outlets have been accused of "consistently spreading false information about the ongoing military operation," referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since the invasion, Russia has cracked down on independent foreign and domestic media, categorized certain Western social media platforms as "extremist," and criminalized any dissent or criticism of its actions in Ukraine.
